Holy Fuel: Healthy Energy, Body and Soul
Heart Happy

Years ago, if you walked into my office while I was racing against a tight writing deadline, you would have almost certainly found a six-pack of Sugar-Free Red Bull sitting on my desk. Back then, I relied on that quick chemical jolt to make my fingers fly across the keyboard.
But as the years have rolled by, my perspective on health, longevity, and vitality has completely transformed. I traded in the energy drinks a long time ago. Today, my daily fuel looks completely different. Instead of a temporary, jittery caffeine rush that always ends in a midday crash, I’ve discovered the life-giving power of sustainable, holistic fuel: consistent exercise, intentional hydration, whole-food nutrition, and dedicated daily time in the presence of God.
As a health coach and a busy mom, I’ve come to realize that our physical health and our spiritual wellness are intricately woven together. God didn’t design us as disembodied souls; He created us with physical bodies that require proper care so we can fulfill the divine callings He has placed on our lives. When we neglect the physical vessel, our spiritual and emotional reserves are quickly depleted, leaving us feeling cranky, overwhelmed, and completely exhausted.
Both your body and your spirit need premium fuel to energize you for the demands of the day. When we invest in fueling both areas well, the payoffs ripple into every single corner of our lives.
Dual-Fuel Living: Feeding the Body and the Spirit
When we look at the way God designed us, we see a beautiful parallel between what our physical frames need to thrive and what our spiritual hearts require to overflow with joy.

Fueling the Temple From the Inside Out
The Bible tells us explicitly that our physical bodies matter to God. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul reminds us:
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."
Honoring God with our bodies means being intentional about what we put into them and how we move them. For me, that means making time for 30 to 45 minutes of daily exercise—whether that’s a brisk walk outside with the dog, a focused workout video, or even some high-energy “speed-cleaning” that gets my heart rate pumping while I fold the laundry and mop the floors! Movement releases endorphins, clears the mind, and gives us the physical stamina needed to serve our families well.
But physical strength alone isn’t enough. We have to fuel the soul, too.
Years ago, I started by spending just five minutes a day reading my Bible and praying. Then I “stretched” it to ten. Today, I prioritize an hour or more every morning centering my spirit on the Lord before the chaos of the day begins. Jesus modeled this exact spiritual refueling in Mark 1:35: “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” If the Son of God needed to step away to refuel His spirit, how much more do we?
The Ultimate Payoff
When you start fueling your body with good nutrition, plenty of water, and active movement, and you fuel your soul with deep dives into Scripture, something incredible happens. Your jeans might start fitting a little more loosely, but more importantly, your smile becomes broader.
You become a much more patient, joyful, and peaceful person to be around because God’s love is actively bubbling out of a healthy, well-nourished spirit. And that is a beautiful, sustainable radiance that even the strongest energy drink in the world could never replicate.
The Next Step
We truly need each other on this journey. Scripture reminds us that the body of Christ has many parts (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). The part I always believed to be my weakest was my willpower. Yet, because I struggled, I can now offer help. My struggle was not meant for defeat. It was meant to lead to victory, and to help others find their victory, too.

More than anything, give me an insatiable hunger to sit at Your feet and refuel my spirit with Your living Word every single day. Let Your joy overflow from my life today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
