The bond between friends is a sacred one—a journey of mutual affection, spiritual support, and personal growth. In our busy, digital world, finding and cultivating deep connections requires intentionality, understanding, and a heartfelt commitment.

The Bible tells us in Proverbs 17:17, "A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need."

But what does that look like in real life?

The Power of a Friend Showing Up

About seven years into marriage and parenting, my world darkened unexpectedly with the loss of my grandpa. Amidst the heavy grief and the chaos of arranging a funeral, my friend Cindy appeared.

Cindy had been my confidant since my newlywed days, but this was different. She drove in from out of town bearing waterproof mascara, a strong hug, and a tender smile. In that moment, Cindy wasn’t just a “fair-weather friend.” She became the embodiment of Christian love in action. She walked into my grief and whispered, “I’m here for you.”

Through Cindy, I learned what it truly means to be a supportive friend during life’s hardest seasons.

10 Tips for Being a Better Friend

If you want to know how to be a better friend and build lasting relationships, consider these ten principles:

  1. Listen First, Speak Last: James 1:19 reminds us to be “quick to listen and slow to speak.” Cindy listened without a filter, allowing me to process my pain.
  2. Show Up for Milestones: Whether it’s a celebration or a funeral, being physically present matters more than any text message.
  3. Keep Your Promises: Reliability is the foundation of trust. If you say you’ll be there, be there.
  4. Encourage Genuinely: True encouragement doesn’t require a long speech; sometimes, it’s just a simple gesture that speaks volumes.
  5. Respect Boundaries: A good friend intuitively knows when to offer a shoulder and when to give you space to breathe.
  6. Forgive Quickly: Colossians 3:13 urges us to forgive as the Lord forgave us. Don’t let petty disagreements stand in the way of a long-term bond.
  7. Celebrate Success: When I received my first publishing contract around the same time I lost my grandpa, Cindy was the first to cheer. A true friend isn’t threatened by your wins.
  8. Offer Help Before It’s Asked: Proactive help is a gift. Cindy knew I needed waterproof mascara before I even realized I’d be crying through a service.
  9. Stay Honest: Faithful are the wounds of a friend (Proverbs 27:6). True friends share hard truths with gentleness to help us heal and grow.
  10. Nurture the Bond: Deep friendships aren’t accidental; they are nurtured through consistent, caring actions over time.

Reminders for Your Heart

  • A friend knows the song in your heart. When you forget the words, a true friend sings them back to you. Cindy reminded me of the joy my grandpa brought to my life when I could only see the sorrow.
  • Friendship isn’t about duration; it’s about devotion. It’s not about who you’ve known the longest, but who walked in and proved they were staying when everyone else walked out.
  • Friendship multiplies joy and divides grief. As the old saying goes, a burden shared is a burden halved.

True godly friendship means making your friend’s problems your own so they don’t have to face them alone. These relationships are the true measure of our wealth in this life.

A Prayer for Your Friendships

Dear Lord, thank You for the gift of community and the sacred bond of friendship. I ask that You would help me be a friend like Cindy—someone who shows up, listens well, and loves deeply. Please bring godly, supportive friends into my life and give me the wisdom to nurture those bonds. Teach us to bear one another’s burdens and to reflect Your love in every interaction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
